Edition #143 | Read time: 5 Minutes

Did you know that the birth rate in the U.S. dropped 3% in 2023, making it the lowest it’s been in over a century?

Mamas, you’re probably not shocked but countless women are opting to have fewer children (or are opting out of motherhood altogether) for reasons that run the gamut: financial, medical, social, and personal.

Our founder, Paula, spoke with Dr. Jennifer Glass, a sociologist, on this very topic on her podcast, The Paula Faris Show. What she learned? We have a system where moms pick up the slack - they’re fed up, tired, and are starting to say “no”.

We know how tough it is out there, right now. 😅 So we included some resources to hopefully make your lives a little easier. And if you’ve got a teen in the house, we share a fool-proof way to discuss consent with them. 🫖

Enjoy!

This week in The CARRY™ ALL, we’re talking about:

  • 🎙️ Dr. Jennifer Glass on The Paula Faris Show

  • 🍼 Companies with Onsite Childcare

  • Budgeting as a Means to an End

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣

1️⃣ 🎙️ Dr. Jennifer Glass on The Paula Faris Show

We’re having fewer and fewer kids in the U.S. In fact, we’ve reached record-low numbers. But here’s the question: should we care? Our founder spoke with sociologist Dr. Jennifer Glass on her podcast, The Paula Faris Show, to explain the trend and reveal the most puzzling piece about it all. We can’t call ourselves a family-friendly country if our policies don’t support the family, and if the money and power continue to go to those that ignore their families. So, what’s our path forward? Give it a listen and let us know what you think in the comments! 👇🏻

2️⃣ 🍼 Companies with Onsite Childcare

It’s no coincidence that 70% of families are dual-income households - quality childcare is outrageously expensive and hard to come by. And while not everyone can just pick up and leave their job in search of greener pastures, there are companies out there that provide the ideal scenario: onsite childcare. In the market for a new job that can also take the stress out of childcare? Consider these options.

3️⃣ 💰 Budgeting as a Means to an End

If you take student loan debt, high mortgage rates, increasing grocery costs, and a dearth of paid parental leave opportunities into consideration, raising children can be quite expensive. While some of these factors shift with the economy, others are here to stay. That’s why budgeting can be the answer to feeling less strapped, and more able to have the family life you envisioned. Try one of the apps in this article, which range from hands-on zero-based budgeting to simplified budgeting.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎

for working moms with older children
  • We millennials and Gen Xers were more likely than not to have the “consent” talk with our parents. (Heck, even if we got a sex talk it was likely wildly awkward, and/or not helpful.) The topic is crucial, though, as we all know now - which begs the question: What’s the best, non-cringe, most effective way to discuss consent with our teens? This mom came up with a brilliant approach to talking to her son about consent - and there’s no way he’ll ever forget it. How did you talk to your teens about consent? Share your wisdom with our community in the comments below!

  • No one is going to trigger us as much as our teenagers. 🤪 Things are tough when there’s conflict. But here’s the truth - as parents, it’s OUR job to grow and find the strength deep down to keep cool and handle those sticky situations like adults. Is it hard? You betcha. Check out this reel on why it’s so important to level up when dealing with your teen.

Last week’s poll results: Nearly 90% of you said that we are not doing enough to support families in the U.S. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!

➡️ “Child care is expensive. But you want good child care and it’s expensive. Corporations need to help. If they want content employees then help with childcare. But then that cuts into benefits. It’s a hard problem to tackle.

➡️ “I didn’t even get paid maternity leave. I had to use up all my sick time. Then my option was not get paid or come back to work after just five weeks.”

➡️ “Women's rights are constantly under attack in recent history, we aren't trusted with our own medical care, we are expected to work like we do not have kids, and parent like we don't have jobs... the labor of women (paid and unpaid) is at a breaking point and taken for granted. This IS an economic issue since our labor allows for the function of the economy in every sector and every niche.”
