Edition #147 | Read time: 5 Minutes

You might read that quote above and roll your eyes because, let’s face it, sometimes it’s just easier to do this sh*t by ourselves.

Buuuuut, when we do that, we’re robbing our kids of a sense of responsibility. And apparently, their future success, according to Psychology Today. Plus, we become bitter and burned out, which is a recipe for working mom disaster.

So, in this edition, as we prepare for the season of buying holiday gifts, planning events (and cooking for them), attending 101 school concerts and making the memories o’ so magical, not to mention working, working out and handling everything else that we normally do the rest of the year, we’re gonna help take some of that load off you, mama. 😉

We also have some budgeting hacks to help you along, and one pediatrician’s jaw-dropping recommendation for our teens.

Enjoy!

This week in The CARRY™ ALL, we’re talking about:

  • 💵 Budgeting Hacks for Busy Moms

  • 🧹 When Chores Throw Life Off Balance

  • 🧺 How to Get Your Kids to Do Chores

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣

1️⃣  💵 Budgeting Hacks for Busy Moms

Budgeting can feel overwhelming, especially if you don’t have the right tools to manage it. Plus with the holidays coming up, the idea of saving money for gifts and special events can be enough to freak us all out. Fortunately, there are several approaches to budgeting: from The Envelope System, to the 50/30/20 Rule to Zero-Based Budgeting, there’s an approach that will work for everyone. This resource dives into each one, and provides great tips to make them work for you. We particularly loved this advice: “don’t be afraid to experiment with different methods or combine elements from multiple techniques to create a system that works for you.” If you have some advice for our community, tell us in the comment section at the bottom of the newsletter.

2️⃣ 🧹 When Chores Throw Life Off Balance

When you dreamed of someday having a family, the prospect of doing household chores every waking minute that you weren’t working probably didn’t enter the equation. Now that reality has hit, and that chores are a very real, very annoying part of life, it’s important to take a healthy approach. Here we have 6 tips to help you balance work life and chore life. And if hiring help isn’t an option, doing chores as a family seems like the fairest way to go. How do you delegate chores in your home? Let us know in the comments below!

3️⃣ 🧺 How to Get Your Kids to Do Chores

“I’ll do it later!” Famous last words from any kid who was told to do their chores. If you’re struggling to get your kids to actually follow through when it comes to household items on their list, you’re not alone. Distractions like TV and video games can definitely be far more appealing than emptying the dishwasher, after all. This article is chock full of great tips to get your kids to do their chores NOW. Our favorite? Setting a time limit — it keeps them from dragging their feet, and provides the opportunity for a consequence if the chore isn’t done within the set timeframe.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎

for working moms with older children
  • How much sleep is your kid getting? If they’re a teen and they’re getting less than 9 hours of sleep every night, you might want to reconsider their bedtime. While playing sports and doing homework definitely interfere with earlier bedtimes, this article highlights the importance of prioritizing sleep for teens whenever possible. On nights they don’t have an activity? You might want to shoot for an 8:30 bedtime to make sure they’re getting the rest that their growing bodies need. Bonkers, right? Sometimes when it comes to something as important as sleep, fighting the good fight is worth it. What do you think?

  • If you look at what your teen is wearing every day and you cringe, you’re not alone. And while most of us are perfectly happy to live in the land of low-rise jeans and ankle socks, some of us more adventurous parents might want to take a trip over to the dark side of our kids’ fashion. This mom tried 15 trends that her teens convinced her to try. What do you think? Do you have the courage to try mom jeans or cropped tanks? 😅

Last week’s poll results: Over 50% of you said that your kids are aware of everything this election season. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!

➡️ “This was the first year, I really brought my kids into the fold and discussed politics & the election. For my older kids in particular, I think it's very important as in less than 10 years they'll be voting. Being informed is always the best way!”

➡️ “My son is only 9, but he's obsessed with sports and has been exposed to a lot of political ads. We've spent a lot of time talking about fear-mongering and twisting the truth. I don't feel like I want to protect my kids from everything, but I really wish they weren't exposed to so much hatred when trying to watch a football game.”

➡️ “They are way too young to notice.”
