The Health To-do List Most Women Ignore
Last week’s poll told us everything about why we’re avoiding our health

Edition #218 | Read time: 5 Minutes
Hi Mamas -
It’s the last day of March (and Women’s History Month!) and while we love to celebrate the women who have shaped the world, it felt just as important to take care of the women living in it right now, including you.
Last week’s poll made one thing clear. A lot of us are putting off our health appointments, and not just because we are busy.
If you read the quote above and thought, yep, same, you are not alone!
You all had a lot to say about why appointments get pushed off. Time, logistics, mental load.
So this week, we’re talking about it. Because taking care of ourselves should not feel this hard. And you are not the afterthought.
Enjoy!

When it comes to aging, which do you relate to most? |
THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
1️⃣ 👀 What No One Told Us About Perimenopause
This is the conversation so many of us feel unprepared for. You know… all of a sudden we need a desk fan because we turned into a human sauna, mood swings that would make a rollercoaster jealous, we forget why we walked into the room…again, random tears while watching a dog video on social media… the list goes on.
Listen, we need more women talking about this! It’s so often misunderstood and underdiscussed, so let’s go there.
In Season 5 of The Paula Faris Show, our founder dedicated an entire series to perimenopause and helping normalize the conversations we should have been having all along. You can listen or watch here.
We’re also linking “The Symptom List Nobody Gave You for Perimenopause and Menopause” because seeing it all in one place might be the ah-ha moment you’ve needed.
2️⃣ 💪 Habits That Help Women Live Longer
If you’ve been following our newsletter, some of this might sound a little… redundant. But maybe that’s the point. It really is the same stuff again and again and… again that professionals keep saying actually makes a foundational difference.
Ugh, fine. At some point we will listen. Before you roll your eyes and scroll to the next thing, this doesn’t have to cost you a thing.
If you can start consistently showing up in these five areas, they really will make a difference:
Move your body – Even a short walk counts. Your heart (and mood) will thank you.
Sleep like it matters – Power down your devices and give yourself rest.
Check in on your mental health – Journaling, therapy, or venting to a friend.
Eat like you love yourself – You don’t need a drastic diet. Come on, let’s all chant it together…protein, protein, protein!
Stay connected – Friends, family, your favorite podcast…social connection boosts longevity more than you might think.
Think of it like planting seeds. You water them consistently, and eventually you WILL see growth… even if it takes a while.
3️⃣ ✨ The Appointments That Take Care of You
Let’s be honest, this is the list most of us avoid. Not because we don’t care, but because it feels overwhelming, inconvenient, or honestly… a little uncomfortable.
But these are the appointments that matter.
Primary care check-up – About once a year, starting in your 20s (sooner or more often if you have ongoing health needs)
OBGYN visit – Yearly wellness visit starting in your late teens/early 20s
Pap smears typically every 3 years (ages 21–29) and every 3–5 years (30+) depending on your providerDermatology check – Once a year for a full skin check, especially if you have fair skin, lots of moles, or sun exposure history
Mammogram / screenings – Typically start at age 40, then every 1–2 years (earlier if you have family history or higher risk)
Mental health check-in – No perfect timeline here, but think of it like this: don’t wait until you’re burned out
If last week’s poll told us anything, it’s that we’re not avoiding these for no reason. The system can feel fragmented, rushed, and hard to navigate.
Here’s your April challenge: Make ONE appointment that you’ve been putting off. Just one! You’ve got this.
📰 IN THE NEWS
Kate Winslet on Aging
In light of our conversations about health, Kate Winslet has been making headlines for her candid thoughts on aging and beauty. We know our community may have a broad spectrum of opinions on this, but we appreciated her honesty and candor around embracing aging naturally in a world that often prioritizes youth over wellbeing.
Last week’s poll results: We asked what the biggest factor is in why you avoid making health appointments, and 28% of you said time.
And we get it. Especially as working moms, time is one of our most valuable (and limited) resources.
Close behind that were two other big ones: “I feel okay, so I push it off” and feeling overwhelmed by actually making the appointments happen.
Honestly… all very real. And very relatable.
Here are some of your thoughts that came through:
➡️ “I am a nurse practitioner. I never delay my health appointments. If you don’t take care of yourself you cannot take care of anyone else!”
➡️ “I don’t have time and cost for health items”
➡️ “I’m self employed and pay for my insurance. It seems to be more expensive this year but isn’t everything. I make sure that I’m completely broken before heading to doctor.”
➡️ “Mainly it's because I have little time to fit appointments in, but also combined with it's overwhelming when I have a laundry list of items that have stacked up as I've put them off. So by time I get to the doctor- it's going to take multiple appointments to figure out each issue- which then overwhelms me and things once again get pushed to the side.”
➡️ “I feel like doctors aren’t helping us. Traditional docs just treat symptoms with a pill and functional medicine isn’t covered my insurance.”
➡️ “It takes so long to get appointments that I keep looking around for providers with sooner availability, and then just don't ever make the appointment.”
