Stress? What Stress? 🤪
And what to do about it
Edition #148 | Read time: 5 Minutes
Stressed? We get it.
And we’re not so naïve as to think that we can tell you to just breathe to make it go away.
Because stress for working moms is a different kind of monster, caused by countless factors: trying to achieve some semblance of a work-life balance, the mental labor load, anxiety about our kids’ futures, our changing bodies, the feeling that we need to be everything to everyone all the time, meal planning, holiday planning….and on and on.
BUT that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take a hot second to explore some tools to help ease that stress a tad, right? And that’s what this edition is all about — making life a little easier to carry this week.
So take a breath (yes, we said it), and give some of these tactics a try. Who knows? You might actually feel a little better. 😉
Enjoy!
This week in The CARRY™ ALL, we’re talking about:
😫 Stressed Much? Let’s Lower those Cortisol Levels
👩❤️💋👨 When Stress Affects Your Sex Drive
👦🏽 Talking with Your Kids About Sex
Does stress affect your intimacy? |
THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
1️⃣ 😫 Stressed Much? Let’s Lower those Cortisol Levels
We can blame the upcoming holidays for our epic levels of stress, but that would be dumb. Because let’s face it: stress is a permanent household guest that will not get the memo that they’ve overstayed their welcome. Stress raises cortisol levels, which can make us feel “on edge”, cause trouble sleeping, and countless other side effects that are too numerous to list here. If you want to kick cortisol out of your house, try these methods first. Our fave? Maintaining a bedtime routine. We focus so much on this for our kids – we should be doing it for ourselves!
2️⃣ 👩❤️💋👨 When Stress Affects Your Sex Drive
Want to know one of those other side effects of high cortisol? You guessed it: low sex drive. Because how are we supposed to focus on being intimate when we have 1,000 things on our mental to-do list, right? Want your sex life back? It all comes down to lowering that cortisol, but you can also try these tricks, like eating stress-relieving aphrodisiac foods (we’ll never look at watermelons the same), and maybe even adding some toys into the rotation. 😜
3️⃣ 👦🏽 Talking with Your Kids About Sex
Speaking of sex… Our founder, Paula Faris, recently spoke with the moms from Birds & Bees on her podcast, The Paula Faris Show. They discuss how to talk to both younger kids, and even older ones who might already be sexually active. Most importantly, they focus on letting go of the pressure to be perfect parents so we can be purposeful and give our kids good information. LISTEN to both episodes here. BONUS: Practical Ways to Calm the F Down
We pulled together some practical tools that you can use to immediately improve your headspace:
Who doesn’t love a head massage? Try this scalp massager out for size
The kids are onto something. Start coloring in your free time instead of doom scrolling.
Holy what? Yep, Holy Basil Tea has been shown to decrease cortisol levels, and it tastes good.
Get it out of your head and onto paper. Try this Let That Sh*t Go Journal
Don’t you feel better already?
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎
for working moms with older children
Dealing with a bit of sass at home? You don’t need to hide in your bedroom until they leave for college. This mom points out that teens stuck in this awkward phase are taking their frustration out on you. So how to deal with it? Reconsider shutting down all their unreasonable requests by instead responding to them with “Yes, if…” You want a ride to a friend’s place? Yes, if you help me with dinner first. You get the idea. This approach makes your teen feel like they have a little more power. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
Nervous because your kid is talking about dating, and you don’t know how to approach the topic with them? First and foremost, see #3 of the Big 3 above! But beyond that, it’s important to get on the same page as your teen. We love these tips, especially talking to them about the importance of them pursuing their own passions!
Last week’s poll results: Nearly 30% of you said that you would spend more time with family if you had fewer household responsibilities, while about 25% of you said you’d exercise. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!
➡️ “I would read books, do crafts, decorate the house!”
➡️ “I'd watch more Food Network and football!”
➡️ “We are empty nesters at this season of life and believe it or not, we really miss the to-do list of having kids at home. We have achieved the endless, all-consuming events every weekend. This is a sweet but lonely season as well. When our house was bustling and "IF" I had more free time, it was certainly spent trying to make our home look like better homes and garden or better yet, Southern Living at home! Ha!”
