THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
1️⃣ 👵🏼 Habits to Ditch to Increase Longevity
Let’s face it: gone are the days of doing whatever you want to your body, and not having any consequences to deal with later. As we get older, a drink or two smacks differently the next day, and a lack of sleep feels practically unbearable. That’s why - as much as we’d like to deny the fact that we’re getting older - it’s smart to take steps that will result in a longer, happier life. Check out this article for some tips, including the importance of managing stress and your social relationships as you age.
2️⃣ 🏋🏽♂️ Not-so-Secret Tips to Avoid Frailty in Old Age
Have you noticed that, since hitting perimenopause (which can begin as early as your mid-30s), those cardio workouts and diets you used to do to stay healthy aren’t cutting it anymore? That’s because how our bodies respond to different stimuli (like exercise and food) changes as our estrogen levels begin to decline. Grrrreat 🙄 Fortunately, there ARE ways to not only stay healthy and fit today, but also to ensure that you have strong, healthy bones and muscles as you get older. (Which is KEY to avoid being frail in old age.) Read all about the approach here, but in short, you’ll want to prioritize lifting heavy weights 2-4 times a week and eating around 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day!
3️⃣ 🥪 When Packing School Lunches is Aging You Prematurely
One of our CARRY™ Moms shared this tip about school lunches in The CARRY™ ALL’s comment section and we LOVE IT. Laurie S. says: “I took the kids shopping for lunch snacks, fruit, drinks and put them in the pantry in labeled plastic bins (with their names on each). After dinner when my hubby and I were cleaning up dishes, checking folders, signing papers, the kids were packing their lunches from their selection in the pantry. Lunches go in the fridge, and they grab them in the morning. It has been a few years since I have packed lunches, but this is one thing you can take off of your plate and empower your kids to become a little more independent.” Brilliant, Laurie!
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎
for working moms with older children
You most likely feel as if you have to enter your kids’ teen years wearing a hazmat suit. Fortunately, Dr. Ken Ginsburg, a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine, is determined to change that narrative. Ginsburg stresses that teens actually do care about what their parents think. 😳 And he encourages parents to be a “lighthouse” for their kids: “a stable force on the shoreline from which they should measure themselves against. You should look down at the rocks and make sure they don’t crash against them. Look into the waves and trust that they will learn to ride them, and it’s your job to prepare them to do so.” You can read more about this refreshing approach here.
Having your own device to play music is undoubtedly a huge milestone for kids. (Raise your hand if you had your own Walkman back in the day 🙋🏻♀️ 👵🏼). But just how closely should you be monitoring what’s on your kids’ playlists? Of course, we listened to hundreds of hours of gangsta rap and turned out OK - but is that the right approach for our kids? This article highlights some things to consider, including how your kids are able to interpret more mature themes in music.
Last week’s poll results: Nearly half of you were wishing for at least one more week of vacation, while only 16% of you are ready for school to start. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!
➡️ “We go back after Labor Day and I’m soaking up all the summer and enjoying the kids the next few weeks!”
➡️ “We had such a wonderful summer, but I was flat out exhausted and so ready for school!”
➡️ “My daughter is starting preschool for the first time, so I'm firmly in the "undecided" camp. I'm excited because I know she's going to LOVE school - but it's also hard for me to accept how quickly the time is going, that my little baby is now a preschooler, and that we're starting on the school hamster wheel for the next 12+ years. I have too many feelings!!”
➡️ “Usually I am very ready to get back to the routine, but now that my kids are a bit older (3,5,7,9) and I'm working FT, I enjoy the more laid-back pace of summer as well as the opportunity to spend time with them without just trying to cram everything all in.”
