Parents in the U.S. are Stressed

If you're on the struggle bus, it's not in your head...

The Carry All

Edition #144 | Read time: 5 Minutes

That quote from Nidia in our comments section really hit home…

Parenting in the U.S. is a struggle. Between the lack of policy support and attitudes like “it’s your kid, it’s your problem” (yeah, that one is super annoying), it’s no wonder the U.S. Surgeon General declared that “parenting is hazardous to your health”.

This week, Paula talks to a mom who had enough, took her family, and moved across the Atlantic in search of a better parenting scenario. For those of you remaining stateside, we have some ways to help you declutter and also find your zen - even while at work.

And, if you’re parenting a teen who loves to talk back (don’t they all? 🤪 ), we’ve got some handy go-to phrases to keep in your back pocket.

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣

1️⃣ 🎙️ Stephanie May Wilson on The Paula Faris Show

If you’ve been gaslighted into thinking that parenting in America isn’t tough and that you’re doing it wrong, we’re here to tell you you’re not crazy. On the latest episode of The Paula Faris Show, our founder and her husband John talk with mom and podcaster, Stephanie May Wilson, who recently moved from America to SPAIN in part because parenting in the U.S. is such a struggle. Tune in to hear about Stephanie’s experience parenting in another country, how their cultures view and support family plus, our new favorite Spanish word and how it could be a game changer for your family!

2️⃣ 😵‍💫 Clutter Got You Down?

Having clutter in your home - your safe space - can be unsettling. And while we can’t all have an Instagram-able home, there are things we can implement to reduce clutter (and thereby reduce stress) from our lives. These Amazon-purchase hacks from influencer @lifewithlainee are game changers for keeping your sanity. We love the homework cart and no-tie shoelace!

3️⃣ 🧘🏽‍♀️ Midday De-Stressor

No one responds well to being told “calm down!”, but sometimes, that’s exactly what we need to do. Without the ability to pop out of work for a midday yoga class when working parenthood is getting the best of us, we like this alternative: a 10-minute meditation that you can do right at your desk. Just pop those headphones in and destress so that the rest of your day is more manageable.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎

  • “Go to your room!” Yeah–ok. Those words will do zilch when it comes to dealing with a teen who’s talking back. So how are we supposed to handle adolescents who are testing out their independence with a bit of an attitude? This article lays out 5 very handy phrases to use in response to a teen who has perhaps taken it a bit too far. One gem? “You’re allowed to be frustrated, but I can’t hear you when you talk to me that way.”

  • “Some 81% of teens ages 13 through 17 feel pressure that leaves them feeling badly about their game plans, achievements, appearances, social lives, friendships and/or how informed they are about issues.” That’s a huge number of teens who are struggling with burnout. While it’s no surprise - since everything in life seems to be pretty stressful these days - there are ways to manage it. One way? Letting kids know that they’re valuable, no matter how they perform. For more insights like these, check out this piece.

Last week’s poll results: Nearly 70% of you said that women are having fewer babies because of money, stress AND personal reasons. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!

➡️ “We have one and I can't foresee feeling like I'll ever be ready to have another. Starting a family later in life gives less time to feel ready and have more kids. Having fewer could be correlated with starting later. Curious if this is just a generational swing and my daughter will end up with 6 kids 🤔

➡️ “I would have had more children or fostered children but financially it was impossible. Most of the younger people in my life feel that it is impossible to have children because of the cost.”

➡️ “My children have witnessed me being a single parent for 30+ years and receiving zero child support. I have worked in a male-dominated industry and have never been paid the same salary as my male counterparts doing the same job. They've lived the challenges with me. My daughter chose to have one child, and my son does not want children. Sadly...”
