Modern Challenges for Working Parents
Our parents never dealt with this stuff!
Edition #132 | Read time: 5 Minutes
Ever wonder if the constant pit in your stomach is par for the course when you’re a parent, or if things are just HARDER these days than they were in the past? Being a modern working parent can definitely be challenging. And it’s safe to say that our own parents didn’t have to contend with everything we face on the daily.
Just last week alone we had to deal with a massive breakdown in transportation (we’re looking at you, Crowdstrike 👀), and an unprecedented shift in politics, with President Joe Biden stepping down from the presidential nomination. Life as we know it can feel chaotic, no matter how much meditation we incorporate into our day. 🤪
Know this: you’re not alone and you’re handling modern parenthood like a pro. 💪 In this edition, we’re providing ways to talk to your kids about politics, and ways to help them build resiliency. Plus, if you have teens, you’ll want to read on to see just how to handle those anxiety-ridden years.
Enjoy!

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
1️⃣ 💪 Building Resiliency in Kids
How do we get our kids to be on screens less? And make better food decisions? Our founder, Paula Faris, talks with James Clear (Atomic Habits author) about this very thing in her most recent podcast episode. They discuss the little things parents can do to help improve their kids habits. But most of all? They dive deep into how to build resiliency in our children - something they’ll benefit from for a lifetime.
2️⃣ 🗣️ How to Talk to Your Kids About Politics
We’re in for a LONG political onramp until the presidential election. As much as we’d like to shield our kids from much of what we see on the news, there are ways to talk to them about politics and the election process that avoids what can sometimes get ugly and very subjective in the media. We found this Simplified podcast episode, “Involving Kids in Political & Government Discussions featuring Sharon McMahon” just for you. And if you don’t know the special guest, Sharon McMahon (better known as @SharonSaysSo) shares non-partisan government facts and political news on Instagram.
3️⃣ 😌 Weighted Heating Pad for Your Neck and Shoulders
We carry pretty much all our stress in our shoulders and neck… maybe it’s because everyone expects everything from us and we’re all bottled up! You are FAR from alone, mama. 🙋🏻♀️ While we can’t always sneak out for a much-needed massage, we CAN work to lessen the tension from the comfort of our own chairs. That’s why we love this weighted heating pad for your neck and shoulders. If only we had a way to order room service to our desk as well. 🤔

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎
for working moms with older children
Like it or not, school’s around the corner. Some are starting this week! If you’ve got a rising middle schooler on your hands, you’re all likely a bit nervous about what’s to come. Aside from changing bodies, challenging curriculum, and friend circles shifting, we’re seeing anxiety around scary situations like school shootings, intense bullying, and increasing youth suicide rates. It’s a lot. But one thing you CAN do for your kid is to listen to the feelings they’re talking about. Don’t dismiss them or try to solve them. Lending an empathetic ear can go a long way. This article goes deeper into how to prepare.
Even though your teen might seem pretty grown up and they’re taller than you, keep in mind that they’re still children in a lot of ways and their relationship with you is crucial for their growth. It turns out that an alarming percentage of teens don’t feel they’re getting the support they need. What’s worse? Their parents think they’re providing enough support. That means there’s a HUGE disconnect between what parents think their kids need and what their kids actually need. Read more in this article that provides context and takes into account how depression and anxiety come into play.
Last week’s poll results: Over 76% of you said that the division of labor is a source of stress in your home! Only 16% of you indicated it wasn’t an issue. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!
➡️ “My husband is amazing. I did the quiz and it made me appreciate him even more when I realized he takes care of almost exactly half of the “things,” including our three kids, plus shares the emotional load.”
➡️ “I do way more than my fair share of the load at home, and I’m exhausted ALL the time.”
➡️ “I am a single Mom so of course it all falls on me. Yes their Dad is involved, but he really doesn't do any heavy lifting. It's very stressful and I cry out of sheer emotional exhaustion some days.”
