The Carry All

Edition #139 | Read time: 5 Minutes

The mental load by definition is the cognitive and emotional effort required to manage a household, family or work. Aka, something mothers are carrying the majority of, right? 😜

We gotchu, mamas. This week, we’re going to:

➡️ free up some much needed space in your brain

➡️ give you some tips on offloading that mental energy

➡️ offer a tactic to show your partner just how much you’re juggling.

And, because this is a community that helps one another, if you have any tips on how to get your partner/kids involved in carrying the mental load, please share in the comment section at the very bottom. Enjoy!

This week in The CARRY™ ALL, we’re talking about:

  • 😣 How to Manage the Mental Load

  • 🃏 The Fair Play Deck for a Conversation with Your Partner

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣

1️⃣ 😣 How to Manage the Mental Load

Sometimes having the conversation about who is doing what around the house is the hardest part. And, as moms, we’d probably just rather do it ourselves because it’ll get done faster and let’s be honest, probably better. But, that’s not healthy…for us, or our families. We like this article’s recommendations on how to manage the mental load, including communicating with your partner, using tools to delegate some of those responsibilities, and giving children age-appropriate chores. (Note that this doesn’t include making yet another list for someone…) 🙄

2️⃣ 🃏 The Fair Play Deck for a Conversation with Your Partner

Chances are, you’ve heard of The Fair Play Book by Eve Rodsky. Well now, you can get The Fair Play Deck, a deck of conversation cards that gets the conversation going for you about who is doing what. It’s especially helpful if your partner has no clue how imbalanced the responsibilities are in your household. While the conversation about shifting the mental load can be a delicate one, these cards definitely help with the process. And don’t miss our founder’s conversation with Eve on her podcast, The Paula Faris Show, about how sharing the responsibilities can improve your relationship.

3️⃣ 🍳 Make It Easy Cookbook Giveaway

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎

for working moms with older children
  • If you have a kid who LOVES gaming, then you are probably already aware of the dangers that are associated with it. It’s one thing to be concerned about too much screen time, but unfortunately lurking predators have taken parental concerns to a whole new level. If you’re worried that your kids might be having inappropriate contact with strangers online, this article can help identify what to look for. We love the recommendations, like playing the video with your kids from time to time, and keeping the gaming console in a shared space in the house.

  • While it’s totally normal to mourn the baby years, there is something wonderfully refreshing about parenting slightly older kiddos. For starters, you can say goodbye to cartoons with theme songs that drive you crazy, and say hello to watching shows WITH your kid that you both like. Kids this age can also be pretty insightful, AND they can help you carry things! What are your favorite parts of parenting teens and tweens? Let us know in the comments below!

Last week’s poll results: Over 60% of you work from home and juggle when you have to work and have a kid home, while about 20% of you take the day off. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!

➡️“I'm so thankful my job is flexible so I can work at home when me or my boys are under the weather. My main life-saver has been a schedule of activities and meals/snacks so my boys can know what the day will look like and it's not just all screen time.”

➡️ “Although there are exceptions, I'm fortunate to have a flexible job that doesn't always require me to be in the office if a child is home. But when I am home with the kids, productivity plummets because young kids still require time. I have to pause to break up sibling fights, prepare meals and snacks, and give them snuggles when they just need attention. It's one of the few times I experience "mom guilt" because my roles collide - I have to work AND be a mom at the same time.”

➡️ “We are blessed to have two sets of grandparents who are local and semi-retired. My parents only have our three kids as grandchildren. And my in-laws only have 6 total, 3 who live an hour away and don't need regular watching because their mother stays home. So we have loads of support!”
