Edition #150 | Read time: 5 Minutes

The holiday season is officially here, and so is the chaos.

Mamas, you know the drill: wrapping up Q4, holiday concerts, work parties, last-minute gift shopping, all the holiday meals. Oh, and don’t forget to take care of yourself! 😂

This month we’ve got you covered — whether you’re negotiating with kids about all the holiday gatherings they need to attend sans video games, or whether you’ve been bested by a 12-inch elf.

And when you’re ready for some cozy, alone time, we have our December Must Reads waiting for you!

But most importantly, let’s tackle this season with zero guilt about what we cross off the list. Ready?

This week in The CARRY™ ALL, we’re talking about:

  • 🎄 When the Elf Has Gotten the Best of You

  • 😆 Tips from a Hostage Negotiator on How to Negotiate with Your Kids

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣

1️⃣   Do, Delegate, or Nope

Just as Mariah Carey starts singing about what she wants for Christmas, our collective blood pressure begins to rise as we think about ALL the things we need to do between now and the end of the year. Finish Q4 strong! Plan for 2025! Buy gifts! Host parties! Get costume for kid’s holiday concert! (What did we miss? 🤔) Well, this year we were inspired by a trend we found from a few years ago: Do, Delegate, or Nope. With SO much on our plates, something’s gotta give. We invite you to make your long list, hand things off, or cross them out completely. This is your friendly nudge to delegate…something we all struggle with.

2️⃣  🎄 When the Elf Has Gotten the Best of You

That freaking Elf. Have you painted yourself into a corner and are currently being held hostage by the Elf on the Shelf? What started as a seemingly harmless, fun addition to the holiday season has now turned into a fresh form of torture for any busy, working parent. Rather than sending your Elf with a one-way ticket to the North Pole, never to be seen again, we found these fun, easy ideas for your little pain in the behind. Pro Tip – set a daily timer for after the kids are in bed, so that you don’t need to make up an elaborate excuse as to why the little guy is in the same spot as yesterday. Oh, the things we do for our kids…

3️⃣ 😆 Tips from a Hostage Negotiator on How to Negotiate with Your Kids

As parents, we are PROS at negotiating—whether we’re negotiating bed time, homework, the music our kids listen to, or ahem, their wardrobe choices, or even trying to convince our partner to do their fair share around the house…every day is a negotiation. And, sometimes, it’s utterly exhausting.

That’s why our founder, Paula, welcomed Chris Voss – a former FBI hostage negotiator – as a guest on her podcast, The Paula Faris Show. You want things done around the house? Then you’ll definitely want to give this episode a listen.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎

for working moms with older children
  • Did your kid come around to sports a little later than their friends? It can be heartbreaking to watch your bigger kid take on a sport, surrounded by peers who have been playing it since they were 3 years old. Can your kid still shine? Absolutely! But the learning curve can be steep and their confidence (not to mention ego) might take a bit of a hit. The good news is that there are plenty of sports kids can start when they’re older without feeling like they’ve missed their chance at excelling. Our fav? Rock climbing – especially if they’re fans of American Ninja Warrior. If your kids came to sports at an older age, how did you support them? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Shopping for your teens for the holidays can be discouraging. Toys are clearly out, and their tastes have become remarkably expensive over the last few years. So what to get a teen who thinks most things are skibidi Ohio? This list is a great place to start – especially the digital instant camera or the mini fridge. They’ll think you’re sigma. No cap. 😉

Last week’s poll results: Nearly 50% of you said that the holidays stress you out — too much to do, and too many people to please. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!

➡️ “Love the family time, don't love the expectations (traveling OR prepping at home with 3 under 6 is...a lot). When possible we only do the traditions WE care about, which means hors d'oeuvres for dinner is one of our new faves!”

➡️ “Trucking cranky overtired children over half the state is not my idea of a good time. Why do we do this to ourselves?!”

➡️ “It’s bittersweet! It’s stressful but the memories make it worth it.”

➡️ “We stopped traveling and stay home. It is just my husband and our 2 youngest children. We love it! It is stress fee and delicious! For now, it works, and we will keep it this way for as long as we can!”
