Juggling Politics with Parenting
Plus some ways to escape from it all..
Edition #146 | Read time: 5 Minutes
Hey mamas, it’s Paula, founder of CARRY™ Media.
That quote above👆🏽from American’s Government teacher, Sharon McMahon, is one I’m really trying to teach my kids, especially at a time when there’s just so much division in the air. She joined me on my podcast to discuss how we can effectively talk politics with our kids, family and friends.
Amidst all the political angst and anger, YOU ARE WELCOME HERE, regardless of your politics. Because I bet we can all agree on a few things:
➡️ Being a working mom should work
➡️ We love our families
➡️ We shouldn’t have to choose between kids and career in this country
Regardless of where we fall politically, I encourage all of us to lean into LEARNING, because as Sharon says, the goal shouldn’t be agreeing. The goal should be to learn.
You are teaching me SO MUCH!
And since we’re all a bit on-edge right now, we have our November Must Reads to help you unwind.
Hugs,
-Paula (Founder, CARRY™ Media)
This week in The CARRY™ ALL, we’re talking about:
👶🏼 Some Good News About the Cost of Child Care
🎙️How to Talk Politics with Your Kids
😌 Plan Your Escape
Have you been discussing the election with your kids? |
THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
1️⃣ 👶🏼 Some Good News About the Cost of Child Care
We’ve posted about the egregious cost of child care in America until our faces turned blue. But now, at least one state in our Union has figured out a solution. A program in New Mexico takes a small portion of oil and gases taxes and diverts it to child care programs across the state. The result? Families making $120K or less get free or subsidized child care, the teachers make more money (and there is less turnover), and ALL parties involved get a shot at the middle class. Props to the mama that shared this story to us! Check it out here.
2️⃣ 🎙️How to Talk Politics with Your Kids
Recently, our founder chatted with Sharon McMahon (a.k.a. America’s Government Teacher - @sharonsayso) on The Paula Faris Show. They discussed how to teach our kids to talk about politics in an appropriate and civil way, how to disagree without dehumanizing other people, how to give our children age-appropriate agency and - perhaps most importantly - practical ways to help our kids develop critical thinking skills in order to distinguish between bias and lies in information. Check out the episode here!
3️⃣ 😌 Plan Your Escape
We’re tired of talking about politics too. Need an escape from the election, work, kids, chores — from everything? Here are some ways to take back your peace:
📖 Our November Must Reads are below! Grab a book you haven’t read and let your mind go elsewhere.
📺 Have you checked out “Nobody Wants This” on Netflix? If you haven’t, grab a cozy spot and prepare to binge all 10 episodes, because OMG it’s THAT good.
🍹Make yourself a Tart Cherry Mocktail! Tart cherry juice naturally contains high amounts of melatonin, so this yummy drink will help you feel calm and sleepy.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎
for working moms with older children
Has your middle schooler entered the group chat? If you’ve noticed that your young teen is being pulled into chatter with a bunch of friends, should you be concerned? Chances are, the back and forth among the group is harmless. But kids don’t yet have the maturity to turn it off and step away when the distraction is becoming too much. We enjoyed this mom’s take on her own sixth grader who was sucked into the group chat himself.
Raising children these days is not for the faint of heart. There’s no guide book on how to best guide them as they grow. Fortunately we found these 21 Completely Subjective Rules for Raising Teenage Boys - but we’ve got to say that most of them apply to raising girls as well. Our favorite? “Be trustworthy. Be respectful. If they turn to you with something bad or hard, the first message should be, ‘I’m so glad you told me.’ The second message should be, ‘How can I help?’”
Last week’s poll results: Nearly 50% of you would let AI take meal planning and grocery lists off your plate. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!
➡️ “While I love cooking and I don't mind grocery shopping, I HATE coming up with meal plans!”
➡️ “I won’t lie, AI freaks me out. I want to be on board, but I just can’t seem to get past the whole iRobot thing 🤦🏼♀️”
➡️ “My dream is for AI to take what I need from the grocery store, shop it around at select stores and select brands to find the best price, then add it to my pickup order cart.”
➡️ “Homework and managing school items is so mentally taxing. If AI can help, without causing cheating or plagiarism, I'd be all in!”
