That’s sick… | 2-27-24

Edition 110

The Carry All

Edition #110 | Read time: 5 Minutes

This stat has us laughing (through the coughing 🤧) because… well, it’s sick season and like a lot of you — we’ve been wiping noses, dosing Motrin, and inhaling Vitamin C in between calls.

In all seriousness — we’re collectively counting down the days until Spring when we can safely (kind of) assume that most of the viruses have gone into some reverse hibernation or something.

Something else we’re counting down the days until?

That’s right.

The ULTIMATE working mom bag that YOU designed in collaboration with ABLE is officially launching on Tuesday, March 19th.

We can’t believe it’s finally here… and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on it in just a few weeks! We’ll share all the deets, soon! 🎉🎉🎉

This week in The CARRY™ ALL:

  • 🤧 What’s on our sick season must-have list

  • 💌 A hug to the mom who hasn’t felt herself lately

  • 👯‍♀️ A girl-mom conversation worth hearing

v

Have you had to take more than 4-days off to care for sick kids over the last 12 months? (Keep reading below👇🏽 for results from last week's Quality of Work/Life Poll)

THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣

1️⃣ Sick Day Necessities 🤒

‘Tis the season for sickness to spread. And if you are anything like us, your family has been hit with all the viral variations of germs going around. So, we’ll add Purell Wipes and this game-changing Vitamin C to our ABLE bags to help keep the germs at bay.

PS: If you haven’t already, sign up for Blueberry Pediatrics for unlimited 24/7 pediatric visits for $20/month. This monthly membership is our sick season must-have for moms of littles. (And this isn’t even sponsored content… we just love it that much!)

2️⃣ Sick Day Screen time 📺

When you’re sick, your little ones are sick or — worse yet — you’re all sick — and you have no energy… you need screen time. To keep the mom guilt at bay — we turned to ChatGPT to help us curate a list of semi-educational, low-stimulating shows for kids of various ages — and we thought these recommendations were spot on.

Here's the prompt we used, but feel free to change it for more age-appropriate answers:

“My kids are home sick from school — they are 4, 8, and 12. What are the best shows streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime for each age group? I want the shows to be non-violent, age-appropriate, semi-educational, and low-stimulating.”

3️⃣ Sick Day Comfies 👚

And who doesn’t need the perfect (matching) comfies — sick or not? Go ahead and get this lounge set for those slow days spent hanging out on the couch. We promise you won’t regret it.

TO THE MOMS OF OLDER KIDS

If you’re a mama who finds this season hard or wants to connect with your teenage daughter, this is for you.
  • Moody teen daughter? Listen to this. Our founder, Paula Faris, sat down with her daughter and adolescent therapist, Sissy Goff, to talk through how to connect again. Grab your daughters (and tissues!) and listen together as they dig into what Sissy calls “the narcissistic years,” the anxiety our girls are carrying, and practical advice and ideas for connecting and supporting our daughters. That’s just Part One. In Part Two, they answer allll your questions about dating, clothing, phones and moodiness. 😘

  • All this talk about being sick… but what if you just haven’t felt yourself lately? Maybe you’re in the thick of it and think motherhood feels really hard right now. We can relate so much to this Reel. And mama, consider this your reminder to not try to carry it all. xo

In last week’s Quality of Work/Life Poll we saw that HALF of you are getting a C, 25% of you are failing, and the other 25% are getting an A+. Keep reading for more of your comments from last week’s poll:

➡️ Since I work from home, it’s hard to disconnect. I made a small step in the right direction by getting a dedicated work phone rather than having everything on my personal cell phone, but I could use more tips!”

➡️ I am never 110% at work and 110% at life; a C seemed about right because even if work was an A+, I would be failing at home, and vice versa, so a solid C seemed in the middle.”

➡️ Balance is so much easier said than done.”

➡️ My boss is incredible at allowing me to have work/life balance, but working from home with a 2 year old feels like going into battle every day. I'm exhausted.”

➡️ I work 3 days a week, so I have time to fully devote to being a mom and fully devote to my career. I realize I’m in the minority, and am so thankful for my family’s financial stability and husband’s encouragement to support this work/life balance.”

➡️ I wish our culture offered more flexible jobs. I don't mean I can leave and take my child to a doctor's appointment, I mean jobs that are not 9-5 Monday through Friday. If I had a 4 day work week or other reduced schedule I would be just as productive and find the space I need to take better care of myself. I don't know why this culture focuses on hours and not outcomes.”
