Are we actually supporting families in the U.S.?
Plus, our favorite meal prep app.
Edition #142 | Read time: 5 Minutes
Ever look at other countries that support families through subsidized childcare, paid family leave and other pro-family policies and wonder when the U.S. is going to catch up?
Us, too. 🤦🏽♀️
In this issue, our founder (Paula Faris) talks to the former Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, who tells her that supporting families shouldn’t be a partisan issue. It’s an ECONOMIC issue.
We’re also going to help with meal planning and mental health…two things that are essential in any working family’s home. Plus, if you have older kids, we’ve got some one-liners that’ll ensure you are the voice in their heads. 😆
But, before we jump in, the FIVE winners of the Danielle Walker MAKE IT EASY cookbook giveaway are below. Ladies, reply to this email with your mailing address so we can get you your free cookbook! 🎉 🎉 🎉

Are we doing enough to support families in the U.S.? |
THE BIG 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣
1️⃣ 🎙️ Scott Morrison, former PM of Australia, on The Paula Faris Show
When it comes down to it, do America’s policies actually support families? We’ve made this political, and that’s where we’ve gone wrong because this is an ECONOMIC issue. As Australia’s former Prime Minister Scott Morrison told Paula on her podcast, when families are supported through family-friendly policies, the economy booms. Not only that, families are strengthened and we close the gender equity gap. 💥 Give it a listen and let us know what you think in the comments below!
2️⃣ 🍲 Meal Prep App to Save the Day
Don’t you just love sitting down after a long day of work and parenting only to MEAL PLAN? Yeah, we didn’t think so. It might be time to let a meal prep app take that task off your plate. (Pun intended.) We love Eat This Much, which has a free version and a premium option for $5/month. Let the app generate daily meal plans, automate your grocery lists, and come up with custom recipes. That way if your kids don’t like what you make, tell them to blame the 'bot. 😜
3️⃣ 💻 Telehealth for Your Mental Health
Fortunately, there’s been a stronger focus on mental health in recent years. And as busy working moms, we know that we can’t really be there for our loved ones if we’re not OK. What’s more, who has the time to find a good therapist and actually go to therapy sessions? We’re big fans of telehealth for working moms—from the comfort of your own home, you can meet or your family member can meet with a therapist and talk through it all. Better Help even offers couples and teen counseling, in addition to individual therapy. Have you tried telehealth for therapy? Let us know in the comments below.
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 🤎
for working moms with older children
For better or worse, the voices of our parents are the ones in our heads - at least for a long time. (The jury is out on just how long those voices stay put in there. 🤪) They might hate it when you’re repetitive, but their prefrontal cortexes aren’t fully developed yet, and quite frankly they can use all the help they can get. That’s why we love this mom’s approach to being the voice in her own kids’ heads by using one liners to make her point. Some great ones include: “You can be mad, but you can’t be mean”, “Everyone’s brains and bodies work differently”, and “You don’t have to be friends with everyone, but you do have to be friendly.” What one liners would you add to the list? Let us know in the comments! 👇🏻
As things heat up in the weeks leading up to the Presidential Election, there’s no doubt that your kids are being exposed to countless ads and opinions in their daily lives. So how are we supposed to talk to them about the election in a meaningful (and age-appropriate) way when questions come up? We found some helpful tools to do just that. Most importantly, we shouldn’t shy away from politics, since experts agree that discussions about elections can actually help with teen and child development. How are you approaching talking about politics with your teens? We want to know.
Last week’s poll results: Nearly 50% of you have left or would consider leaving the workforce because you don’t have the flexibility to be a mom AND an employee. 25% of you have a partner with a demanding job. Keep reading for a few of your thoughts and comments!
➡️ “I want to say, I would like to work, just not 40 hours a week. I wish there were more flexible positions for Moms that were 30 or 32 hours. Most times when I job hunt I see 40 hours or 20 hours. Not the flexibility I'm looking for...”
➡️“I simply cannot do it all. After 10 years leading an organization, being our family’s primary breadwinner, and being the default parent a majority of the time, I’m exhausted. So - I’m starting my own business so I can be in control and do what’s best for our family.”
➡️ “I'm very fortunate to have a well-paying, fully-remote, half-time job that allows me to be a well-balanced mom and an employee. The secret? The company is based in London xD”
